BEYOND the Backstretch is an organization and event platform dedicated to supporting Thoroughbred aftercare and advocating for the breed beyond the racetrack. Through professionally run horse shows, partnered divisions at equestrian events, and year-round fundraising and educational initiatives, we showcase Thoroughbreds thriving in second careers while generating direct financial support for aftercare organizations.

At the core of our mission is the belief that retired racehorses deserve meaningful second chances and sustainable futures. By highlighting the versatility, athleticism, and heart of Thoroughbreds in a wide range of disciplines, BEYOND the Backstretch works to change perceptions, increase demand for the breed, and create tangible opportunities that benefit both the horses and the programs dedicated to their care.

Each year—or over a two-year cycle—BEYOND the Backstretch selects two Thoroughbred aftercare organizations to serve as our fundraising partners. Through our events and initiatives, funds raised are directed to these organizations to support rehabilitation, retraining, and responsible placement of retired racehorses. This focused approach allows us to build deeper relationships, increase transparency, and maximize the impact of every dollar donated.

Beyond fundraising, BEYOND the Backstretch is committed to amplifying the voices of our aftercare partners throughout the year. Through interviews, event features, educational content, and behind-the-scenes storytelling, we highlight the vital work these organizations do and demonstrate the real-world impact of community support. Our goal is to connect people to the mission, inspire involvement, and ensure Thoroughbreds receive the recognition, care, and opportunities they deserve long after their racing careers end.

Why do I care so much

A Journey with Thoroughbreds: From Childhood Memories to Advocacy

The photo above captures a moment from my childhood with my Thoroughbred, Faithful Steps, affectionately known as “Squirt” around the barn. She was a small black mare with endless sass and a heart of pure gold. Together, Squirt and I shared an unforgettable journey—moving from Maiden equitation at 2’ all the way to the beginning of 3’6”. At that time, the horse show rings were filled with Thoroughbreds, and she was my steady partner as I learned not only how to ride, but how to truly become a horsewoman.

Squirt taught me lessons that have stayed with me for a lifetime. Her sensitive, spirited nature demanded softness, patience, and understanding. She showed me the power of quiet hands, a balanced seat, and the importance of asking with kindness rather than force. Our relationship was built on trust and mutual respect, and through her, I learned the true meaning of horsemanship.

As the show world gradually shifted toward Warmbloods, I stepped away from Thoroughbreds for a time—but my heart never truly left them. Many of the horses and ponies I owned still carried Thoroughbred bloodlines, a reflection of my enduring admiration for the breed. I’ve always been drawn to their elegance, their intelligence, and their undeniable spirit. I suppose I’ve always been a romantic when it comes to Thoroughbreds.

Years later, a visit to the racetrack reignited that passion in a powerful way. Becoming involved with a local Thoroughbred aftercare organization—where I had the privilege of serving on the board—opened my eyes to the critical need for advocacy beyond the finish line. It showed me how vital aftercare is, and how much opportunity exists to give these horses meaningful second chances. From that point forward, I became deeply committed to ensuring Thoroughbreds receive the care, respect, and opportunities they deserve after their racing careers end.

Around the same time, I experienced a turning point in my own life when I was unexpectedly laid off from a job. That moment forced me into a new path—one filled with growth, reinvention, and success I hadn’t anticipated. That experience shaped my belief that Off-The-Track Thoroughbreds deserve the same opportunity: a do-over, a chance to shine in new disciplines, and a future where they are valued and loved.

That belief is what led me to create and host BEYOND the Backstretch events. These events are designed to showcase the incredible versatility, heart, and value of Thoroughbreds while changing perceptions and celebrating what makes them so special. My goal is to remind people that owning and riding a Thoroughbred is not only a privilege, but a deeply rewarding partnership.

My journey with Thoroughbreds has been one of love, learning, and lifelong advocacy. From my early days with Squirt to my work today promoting aftercare and second careers, my devotion to these horses has never wavered. They have given me so much, and it is my mission to give back—ensuring they have the opportunity to live full, meaningful lives beyond the racetrack.

The story of the Thoroughbred is one of resilience, grace, and heart. I am proud to be a part of that story, and even more proud to stand alongside those who believe, as I do, that every Thoroughbred deserves a chance to find their place in the world—just as they helped me find mine.
